Hawker, like most country towns,
has enjoyed a long and strong history of participation in sport. In recent
years, like so many towns across the nation, the town and surrounding
district has lost many of its younger people. The lack of youth has made
it increasingly difficult to maintain viable competition in almost all
sports.
However, thanks to some forwarding
thinking citizens and support from the wider community, the town opened
new purpose built clubhouse and regional playing facilities in 1996.
These facilities cater for basketball, cricket, golf, lawn bowls, netball
and tennis. Without these shared facilities, it is unlikely that any
sport, apart from perhaps golf, would be viable.

other occasions
